A Night at the Showboat

We recently had a Saturday off and decided to take the girls to the Showboat Drive In Theater, about 10 miles west of Tomball. It was our first time there.

We started the evening with dinner at Mel's Country Cafe in Tomball. They are famous for their hamburgers, which were really good. Unfortunately I couldn't finish mine, but I would definately like to go back. :-)

After dinner we headed over to the Showboat. The gates opened around 7. The movies were going to start at dusk, so we had a while before they started. We parked the van backwards, opened the back end, and set up some chairs. After a quick visit to the snack bar, all we had to do was wait. It ended up being a two hour wait before the movie started.

While we were waiting for the movie to start, there was actually a nice breeze. Unfortuntaely, that nice breeze was in the front of a storm that came through just as the first movie was starting. The wind picked up, a small dust storm blew through the parking lot, and then it started to rain pretty hard. So as the other cars scrambled to turn around and face the screen, we shoved the chairs in the back end, climbed in, and shut the tail gate.

It was a funny sight to see us all crammed in the back end trying to watch the movie through the back window with the wiper on and the windows fogging up. Every so often the rain would let up and we would open the back end, then it would start raining again and we would close it. Luckily about half way through the movie it finally quit and we could open up the back end and set up a couple of chairs. So we were able to enjoy the rest of "Despicable Me."

"Despicable Me" ended at 11:15. It was a lot later than we thought it was going to be when we started this adventure, but we were determined to stay for the second movie. We turned the van around, and settled in for the second movie, "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." Our double feature ended at 1:15. It was a very late night, but definately a fun and memorable evening. I know we look forward to going again soon.

Happy Independence Day!

Lisa & I met 12 years ago on July 4, 1998. We have been fortunate enough to spend almost every Independence Day together since then (with the exception of a couple of years). Of course the kids enjoyed getting to be together, too.

July 4th fell on a Sunday this year. Lisa & I got to sing on praise team at church that morning. The service was full of fun patriotic music. Lisa sang "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy" in a trio with Lindsey Wittenmyer & Jane McKinney. They sounded great. I had Allen record it during the service. Here is the video.

Later that night, after the fireworks Rebecca, Kathryn, & Maya decided to sing the "Star Spangled Banner." You may have to turn your speakers up to hear Rebecca, but I love hearing them sing. :-)

Moody Gardens...

We recently were lucky enough to have a free Saturday, and decided to drive down to Moody Gardens in Galveston for the day. Yes, after living here for twelve years, we finally made it to Moody Gardens. ;-)

We spent most of the afternoon in the Aquarium Pyramid. It was really beautiful. We saw a California sea lion, harbor seals, sting rays, penguins, sharks, seas turtles, eels, sea horses, and lots and lots of fish.

The girls were even able to touch a star fish in a touch tank.
After about 4 hours in the Aquaurium, we took the girls to a 3D IMAX movie, "Sharks."
We ended our Moody Gardens adventure with a visit to the "Amazeing Butterfly" exhibit.

We had such a fun day, but there was so much more that we didn't get to see. So we decided to upgrade our tickets to a family membership. Now we have a year to go back see everything else. :-)
